The Opportunity
SAIT is seeking a Total Rewards Specialist with expertise in Compensation & Classification to lead and implement strategic initiatives that enhance SAIT’s job evaluation framework, pay structures, and overall compensation strategy.
Reporting to the Manager, Total Rewards, this role is instrumental in designing and governing SAIT’s compensation and classification policies, frameworks, and guidelines to ensure transparency, equity, and market competitiveness.
This role requires expertise in job evaluation, salary administration, policy development, and stakeholder engagement, with the ability to translate complex compensation concepts into practical, user-friendly guidance for leaders and employees. The Specialist will play a critical role in supporting organizational change, workforce planning, and leadership education on classification and compensation best practices. Additionally, this role will support SAIT’s pension and benefits programs, ensuring a well-rounded and holistic approach to Total Rewards that enhances the overall employee experience.
Role Responsibilities
Compensation & Classification
Lead the implementation of SAIT’s Compensation & Classification framework in collaboration with Mercer.
Develop and maintain job evaluation frameworks, grading structures, and compensation strategies.
Ensure job descriptions align with classification standards and business needs.
Establish a classification committee to ensure transparency and consistency.
Support organizational redesigns by analyzing compensation impacts.
Provide insights and recommendations to senior leadership and the Board.
Total Rewards Strategy & Governance
Oversee compensation, pension, benefits, and recognition programs, ensuring alignment with SAIT’s strategic direction.
Partner with HR, Finance, and external vendors to optimize total rewards programs.
Support collective bargaining preparations and union engagements.
Stay updated on legislation and industry trends to ensure compliance and future readiness.
Lead special projects related to total rewards strategy, data analysis, and continuous improvement.
Program Management
Manage compensation programs, including pay equity, benchmarking, and compliance reporting.
Administer pension (defined benefit/contribution, RRSP, TFSA) and benefits programs.
Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Prepare materials for Board and Committee meetings.
Education & Communication
Develop and deliver communication materials to educate employees and leadership on total rewards.
Act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance on complex compensation, pension, and benefits matters.
Enhance employee engagement through clear, accessible information on total rewards programs.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Research and analyze market trends to ensure competitive total rewards offerings.
Maintain data integrity across compensation, benefits, and pension programs.
Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting frameworks to track program effectiveness.
Conduct budgeting and forecasting for compensation costs.
Qualifications & Experience
Post-secondary degree, with preference given to specialties in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
5 or more years’ experience in senior compensation and/or benefit work is required
Proven experience in compensation and total rewards within a complex organization.
Strong knowledge of job evaluation, pay equity, and compliance requirements.
Experience in building and sustaining complex total rewards strategies and programs is an asset
Experience in a unionized environment is preferred
Proficiency in advanced excel such as experience building macros, compensation spreadsheets, etc
Completion of CCP and/or CEBS designation (or currently enrolled) is desired
Technical Capabilities
Experience managing vendor relationships and optimizing program efficiency.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to interpret and apply legislation, collective agreements, policies and other compliance requirements
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and workload independently
