Detailed Overview

In accordance with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC standards of practice, Fraser Health's vision, mission and values, the strategic plan of Fraser Health, the concepts and principles promoting quality practice and learning environments and national interprofessional competencies, the Occupational Therapy Educator provides clinical education and learning support for identified areas within Occupational Therapy. Provides clinical and educational support, plans, implements and evaluates educational activities and programs. Collaborates with Clinical Practice Leaders regarding related clinical education and learning support strategies, gathers information for ongoing quality improvement and review, and participates in research functions related to Occupational Therapy practice. This job is expected to work at multiple locations across Fraser Health.


Responsibilities

  1. Determines education priorities that meet population and learner needs; completes learning needs assessments of individuals or groups to assist in the determination of the educational requirements and their objectives.
  2. Develops, plans and revises educational and learning support programs for specific Occupational Therapy related areas for individuals and groups based on practice standards, clinical evidence, competency frameworks, clinical decision support tools, literature and resources, and education theory.
  3. Creates effective e-learning environments; utilizes education theory and builds strong professional relationships with learners and interprofessional team in order to facilitate learning.
  4. Delivers learner-centered education to staff/students through methods such as teaching, role modeling, demonstrating, mentoring, coaching, facilitating groups learning in simulation, online or clinical settings, providing lectures, and conducting formal presentations.
  5. Plans and schedules educational activities and maintains a system for tracking attendance; maintains statistics for reporting purposes.
  6. Evaluates education effectiveness by measuring the learning outcomes, determining whether the clinical objectives have been achieved for groups and individualized learning support programs, and assessing whether learning has occurred that results in demonstrated competency.
  7. Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities by methods such as evaluating effect of changes in practice, and generating recommendations for alternative education approaches.
  8. Participates in student placement and student practice planning discussions in collaboration with Social Work Clinical Practice Leaders and a variety of programs/key partners.
  9. Participates in research and special projects; promotes staff awareness and involvement in research activities.
  10. Participates in a variety of designated professional and operational committees and initiatives; collaborates with Occupational Therapy Clinical Practice Leaders and a variety of programs/key partners.
  11. Participates in the review, development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-informed clinical decision support tools/policies.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience


Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. Three (3) years' recent related clinical experience in a health care environment, including one (1) year in a teaching or supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Ability to foster effective teaching and learning relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of key partners in preparing training and programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem solve and effectively deal with conflict situations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a continuously changing environment.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including related software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
