Detailed Overview

In accordance with Residential Care, Assisted Living and Specialized Populations (RCAL & SP) program's vision, mission and values, the Recreation Assistant, Residential Care carries out established recreational/leisure activity based programs to embed recreation/leisure in the lives of residents to facilitate quality of life experiences and to create the ambiance of a home-like setting.


Responsibilities

  1. Carries out resident recreational/leisure programs such as arts and crafts, sports, music woodworking, cooking, horticulture, cultural events, and community outings as directed; sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activity projects, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents; oversees the residents activities and reports problems and/or changes to the Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Therapist or designate.
  2. Carries out resident recreational/leisure activity programs outside the facility; checks that residents have appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity; confirms details of proposed activity with nursing staff/medical staff; coordinates the movement of residents during the activity and teaches the techniques or related activities.
  3. Provides direction to volunteers during recreational/leisure programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  4. Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the Recreation Coordinator/therapist/designate. .
  5. Follows established process to fund enhanced recreational/leisure programs and completes documentation relating to the use of resident monies.
  6. Organizes and maintains program activity areas.
  7. Provides input and feedback with respect to program recreation/leisure activities at regular planning meetings, such as resident participation in activities.
  8. Accompanies residents and/or transports one or more passengers by operating a vehicle and/or bus, as required.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Food Safe Certificate. Current certification in Basic First Aid & CPR Level C.

Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted), as required.
