Detailed Overview

The Clinical Psychologist works as a member of an interprofessional clinical team, providing psychological treatments to inpatients on medical/surgical wards. The Psychologist also provides consultative services to referral sources regarding issues relevant to the practice of clinical psychology. Further, the Psychologist supervises Psychology residents and senior practicum students in the practice of evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapies. The Clinical Psychologist may also provide psycho-diagnostic assessment services.


Responsibilities

  1. Provides evidence-based psychological treatment to medical/surgical in-patients, addressing a wide variety of presenting clinical issues, such as mood and anxiety disorders.
  2. Accepts referrals from clinical team members and provides consultation on assessment and treatment issues, which may involve interventions such as a formal assessment, group or individual therapy.
  3. Provides a comprehensive oral and/or written assessment of client functioning that may include specific information on any of the following areas: psychological (including psychological/psychiatric and personality disorders), intellectual.
  4. Conducts assessments through a variety of treatment modalities including interviewing, behavioural, observation, self-report inventories and psychologist administered test batteries.
  5. Produces and maintains confidential client clinical records in accordance with established standards and procedures; writes timely and accurate reports of relevant observations and evaluation of care to ensure continuity of communication and full client documentation.
  6. Offers consultation to colleagues on assessment and treatment issues, which may involve a direct consultation as with a formal assessment or a discussion with the colleague over concerns regarding a particular client.
  7. Participates in the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, pathways, protocols and decision support tools for psychiatric patients/clients across the hospital and community. Assists with the analysis of data in order to make necessary adjustments to guidelines and pathways.
  8. Attends and participates in multidisciplinary conferences, medical rounds, and service and department meetings.
  9. Participates in program evaluation, program planning, and program implementation, education services and consults to program services and committees as requested.
  10. Participates in short and long term planning for Consult/Liaison Psychiatry Services and in the establishment and auditing of quality assurance activities.
  11. Supervises psychology students and interns as assigned.
  12. Participates in clinical research activities.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience


Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

Current registration or eligible for registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC).

Two (2) years recent related experience in evidence-based psychological treatments of mood, anxiety, and other disorders, as well as experience with psycho-diagnostic assessment of psychological function and disorders.

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychological treatments, as well as developmental theories, family and social dynamics and behaviour management modalities, psychological testing and interpretation.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive written assessments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of the service delivery systems at the local, regional and provincial level.
  • Demonstrated ability in implementing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
