Job Description:

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Process materials by loading, unloading, sorting, storing donations; protecting the integrity of the donations.
  • Selects donations for store distribution meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded and good quality merchandise according to The Salvation Army standards.
  • Ensures safe and careful handling of all deliveries and donations while protecting property, including donations and vehicles.
  • Provides customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service.
  • Selects donations for store distribution meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded and good quality merchandise according to The Salvation Army standards.
  • Assists driver with bringing extra donated items to warehouse for later delivery to Qualicum Beach and Parksville stores.
  • Sorting supply and supply delivery to Parksville and Qualicum Beach stores at warehouse.
  • Loads and unloads goods at the warehouse, store bay area, destinations and other storage facilities.
  • Maintains knowledge of legislative and The Salvation Army policies such as Health & Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts.
  • Takes responsibility for daily and overall safety, maintenance, operation of vehicle and records of such.
  • I absence of truck driver drives the truck to stores location, warehouse, Soup Kitchen, Food Bank.
  • Performs warehouse stock shelving.
  • Operates or runs a forklift.
  • Cleans/upkeeps the warehouse and backyard.
  • Seasonal pick-ups/deliveries to/from Thrift Stores, Admin/Food Bank/Soup Kitchen. This may mean at times assists Food Bank Driver with Food Drives pick-ups and grocery stores food donations pick-ups; pick-up clothing, shoes and miscellaneous donations from Soup Kitchen and Food Bank; delivering Kettle stands to kettle locations at Christmas.
  • Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness)
  • General cleanup/garbage emptying in the warehouse and bay area.
  • Replaces the truck driver over vacation time and leave time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Reports to Thrift Stores Manager or Assistant Manager (in absence of TS Manager); communicates with truck driver and other bay workers, donors.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to: Stores Manager or Assistant manager (in absence of Stores Manager)
  • Direct reports for this position: N/A.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:

  • The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The incumbent's work environment is typically in a truck and warehouse.
  • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
    • Garbage
    • Odours
    • Dirty environment
    • Truck Fumes
    • Excessive noise
    • Extreme temperature changes
    • Work schedule may impact life (weeknights & weekends)
  • The incumbent is required to travel more than 70% of the time.
  • The incumbent works on-call for emergencies only.
  • The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
    • Moving objects
    • Driving in hazardous conditions
    • Risk of back injuries (throwing out back)
    • Traffic accident injuries
    • Other potentially dangerous situations
  • The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
    • Universal Precautions
    • Wear safety shoes
    • Wear gloves
    • Use back braces

education and experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • The successful job applicant will have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable..

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • The successful applicant will hold/have:
    • Valid "G or C" class license with appropriate certification
    • Proof of a clean driving record
  • The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
    • One year but less than three years of prior related experience.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • The performance of the job requires frequently sitting for long periods of time, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting and kneeling.
  • The performance of the job requires frequent safety awareness, concentration when driving and maneuvering furniture.
  • Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
  • Understanding of workplace health & safety requirements, WHMIS, universal precautions applicable to retail/warehouse environments.
  • Continuously standing for long periods of time, frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting, kneeling and occasionally keyboarding for longer periods of time.
  • Attention to detail, continuous visual monitoring.
  • Daily Lifting of 40 lbs. or more with no assistance from others.

Work Hours: 33 hours per week, one year contract, Tuesday - Saturday.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
