Detailed Overview

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families:
Reporting to the Leader, Language Services, The Health Care Interpreter is responsible for the clear communication between health care providers and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients and/or their families. The primary responsibilities include rendering the message between all parties accurately, either in person or remotely in compliance with all authority/hospital policies and procedures and Community Interpreting Standards.


Responsibilities

  1. Interprets (oral rendering of language) for health authority staff and LEP patients/clients/residents and/or their families either in-person or via remote technology with skilled language proficiency from English to target language and target language to English maintaining the accuracy and fidelity of the speakers’ original message.
  2. Keeps accurate documentation of session timing and outcome to track and maintain statistics to support program evaluation processes and utilizes time not spent in interpreting appointments in a constructive manner (i.e. being available to areas of high demand, studying medical terminology, checking e-mails, answering pages and phone calls, etc.).
  3. Maintains personal log of interpreting sessions with respect to challenges or difficulties encountered, for group discussion at staff meetings as part of interpreters' continuing educational development.
  4. Keep abreast of new vocabulary in English and the target language, through continuous research and education and strive to augment overall knowledge and skills in the field in order to maintain high professional standards of performance.
  5. Participates in quality improvement activities and in overall development and growth of the department by providing feedback and input regarding improvements to Interpreting Services policies, procedures and processes.
  6. Assists with health care provider education through departmental in-services, educating staff on how to work effectively with an interpreter, participating in the orientation of new staff and contract interpreters and research projects as opportunities arise.

Qualifications

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to English and target language assessment and diploma in Health Care Interpreting, plus 5 years of experience as a professional Community Interpreter in a health care setting.

Professional/Technical Capabilities

  • Knowledge of Community Interpreting standards is essential.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to set priorities are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy required.
  • Knowledge of target language communities, Canadian culture and the health care system is also required.
