We are currently hiring for a Relief Part Time Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Hospice Residence to join our team at Laurel Place Hospice (Surrey Memorial Hospital)located in Surrey, B.C.  This position is available until approximately April 31, 2025 or until the return of the incumbent.

Surrey Memorial Hospital is a 624 bed, and 36 neonatal intensive care (NICU) bassinette hospital. It is the second largest hospital in the province with the provinces busiest Emergency Department. The hospital offers Cardiac and Critical Care, Obstetrics and Neonatal intensive care, adolescent and adult inpatient psychiatry, surgery, inpatient rehabilitation, ambulatory care, and 24/7 emergency services (including a dedicated pediatrics emergency area) with over 158, 000 visits annually.

Detailed Overview

As a member of a multidisciplinary team, provides direct nursing care to patients of the Hospice Residence at assigned locations according to established policies and procedures by assessing physical, emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs; plans, documents and implements care plans; evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan and makes recommendations for care plan changes, where necessary.


Responsibilities

  1. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care of assigned patients by assessing actual or potential problems and strengths, plans and performs interventions and evaluates outcomes.
  2. Collects information about the patient using a variety of sources such as skills of observation, communication and physical assessment to enable appropriate nursing care.
  3. Communicates and consults with members of the health care team about the patient care plan; participates in interdisciplinary conference and explains plan of care to the patient and/or families.
  4. Acts as an advocate to protect and promote the patient's rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity and access to information.
  5. Documents timely and accurate reports of relevant observations including patient and family teaching and evaluation of nursing care.
  6. Participates on nursing, hospital committees and councils for improvement of patient care and/or work environment.
  7. Participates in the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students by providing information and acting as a preceptor, where appropriate; identifies self-learning needs and attends educational programs to maintain and enhance clinical competency.
  8. Participates in quality improvement activities by identifying patient care issues and collecting data, evaluating patient care programs, techniques, standards and procedures by providing feedback about effectiveness and patient care outcomes.
  9. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation of an approved School of Nursing and/or Psychiatric Nursing. Two (2) years' recent, related medical nursing experience in an acute care facility, including one (1) year recent related experience in a hospice/palliative care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).



Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing practice as it pertains to hospice palliative/residence patients
  • Knowledge of other healthcare professions and their contribution to the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to develop and maintain rapport with the patient, family and caregivers
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
