Job Description

REPORTING TO: Recreation Supervisor

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Recreation Worker assist in the development and the implementation of programs/events to meet the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs of the residents in collaboration with other teams/individuals. Conducts programs with assigned groups of residents as per the Recreation Department schedule, including large and small groups and individual resident assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Post-secondary certificate in Therapeutic Recreation Facilitator for Older Adults (or equivalent) for Recreation Worker. Previous experience in recreation programming for the elderly is desirable. Combination of relevant work experience and education also acceptable.

Food Handlers Certificate also required. Ability to read and write English as well as to understand verbal and written instructions in English. Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, creativity, sound judgment and problem solving skills.. Demonstrated ability to interrelate with other staff, residents, families, the public and volunteers. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work with those with responsive behaviours and death and dying. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and complete assignments in a timely manner. Mentally and physically able to perform duties as well as maintain regular attendance. Computer literacy as required Complete all education as required by Extendicare

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participates in the planning, organizing, implementing and evaluation of recreational/life enrichment programs based on the needs, interests and abilities of those Residents following assessments

Maintains appropriate records of planned programs and attendance as they relate to individual residents. Other related records include: completion of MDS sections, MDS monthly assessment guides, program plans, Care Plans, Assessment checklist, various statistical forms.

Actively encourages residents to attend programs by assisting them to events and coordinate with volunteers as needed.

Assists residents with activities of daily living, which may include feeding, transporting, preparation for outings, etc.

Plans and implements therapeutic exercise programs, in consultation/collaboration with rehab and nursing team.

Accompanies/ supervises residents on outings; i.e., shopping, appointments, community visits, etc.

Sets up areas and cleans areas where programs are held, including decorating to suit the occasion, involving residents in same.

Volunteer designate: Responsible for recruiting, screening, orientating, training, supervising, evaluating, and scheduling of volunteers in the home.

  • Maintains records of volunteer participation; plans and coordinates volunteer recognition functions.
  • Coordinates need for volunteers with Recreation and Nursing staff.
  • Writes, edits, and arranges for distribution of quarterly newsletter for volunteers.
  • Informs new residents and their families of volunteer services.

Performs all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility and the Recreation Department.

Participates in evaluating care and/or services provided by the Recreation Department to residents under the facility Quality Assurance and Improvement Program.

Performs all duties in a manner that is safe, protects themselves and others, and in-line with Extendicare's OH&S policies and programs in addition to provincial regulations and laws.

Performs duties in accordance with prescribed sanitation and infection control procedures.

Respects residents' rights to dignity and privacy and performs duties in a courteous and respectful manner.

Adheres to "Standards of Employee Conduct", "Commitment to Residents", "Bill of Rights", and "Extendicare Quality Care Standards" and Mission, Vision and Values.

Works closely and cooperates with other staff and residents. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Participates in inter-disciplinary care conferences, committees, meetings, as required.
