JOB PURPOSE

To collaboratively participate in the planning and delivery of holistic nursing care to meet individual needs of the critical patient in accordance with the philosophy, objectives and policies of the Neuro ICU and the Neuro Rehab Program. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, provides quality patient care within the scope of professional nursing practice to patients and families in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) adhering to all Standards that apply to this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active registration with Nurses Association of New Brunswick, or eligible for such
  • Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course and recertified yearly as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Successful completion of Advance Cardiac Life Support Course and recertified yearly as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Completion of a certified Critical Care Course or minimum of 2 years critical care experience. If no critical care experience, then recent medical/neuro/surgical experience will be considered via interview panel.
  • Must be willing to take Critical Care Course and be successful within the first year if required.
  • Possesses the medical/surgical nursing knowledge and clinical skills/expertise necessary to provide care for this population and off service patients. Neuro experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations, rapidly changing priorities, and complex patient care needs.
  • Be willing to obtain and maintain competency in the nursing care of patient requiring:
  • BCMI (Basic Cardiac Monitoring Interpretation)
    BCLS and ACLS certification
  • CVAD line - central venous access device
  • PN - parental nutrition
  • Care of the dying and family care
  • Other competencies as necessary
  • Pain Management
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or obtain within 1 year.
  • Demonstrated assessment skills and ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated teaching, communication, interpersonal, and team building skills.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, as assigned, including weekends and holidays throughout the year.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.

  • Participates in Code Blue and Advanced Care Teams within the facility.
  • Administration of titrated and IV push cardio-active drugs.
  • Adheres to legislation and Horizon Health Confidentiality Policy to ensure all patient, business, financial and employee information is accessed on an as need to know basis.
  • Patient Safety is a critical aspect of quality healthcare. Successful candidates must be accountable for creating a culture of safety, working as a team, communicating effectively, and responding to adverse events.
