Description

The Janitor is responsible for performing custodial duties, and other miscellaneous position related duties to ensure that The Salvation Army New Huntsville Corps facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility i.e. empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings, and replace light bulbs as necessary.
  • Sets up rooms in accordance with instructions provided for regular activities.
  • Assists in set up and take down for special activities.
  • Prepares building for Sunday and mid-week services/events.
  • Clean and polish sinks, toilets, urinals and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures.
  • Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required.
  • Monitor safety concerns and major repair issues in areas of heating, plumbing and electrical systems, fans and timers, garbage contractor performance.
  • Ensure exit lights and fire extinguishers are functional and properly maintained by an external professional.
  • Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security; provides access and always secures the facility.
  • Restock washrooms supplies and distributes received material as required.
  • Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Perform several minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as carpentry and painting.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a regular part time position based on 10 hours per week.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities; flexibility is required.
  • Be able to lift/move up to 20 pounds as required.
  • Requires continuously standing for periods of time, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing, and pulling, lifting, and kneeling.

Normal hours of work: The supervisor will set the work schedule in consultation with the incumbent. This will be flexible depending on activities happening at the locations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of Secondary School Education

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including life skills, cleaning experience and familiarity with general maintenance and cleaning supplies and procedures

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Effective skills in oral/written communication, listening, organization and planning, time management, interpersonal relationships, and social interaction.
  • Effective stock taking/ordering skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Must adhere to safety procedures and regulations; work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Pleasant and courteous disposition.
  • Ability to work well with other people.
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
