Work Hours: 18 weeks, 30 hrs./week

JOB SUMMARY

The Varley Art Gallery is hiring a creative, energetic and professional arts administrator looking to build their experience in arts education and programming. Working in an inclusive and vibrant setting, the successful candidate will be responsible for the research, development and delivery of general exhibition tours, and hands on visual arts workshops that align with the Ontario Curriculum. Additionally, they will provide logistical and administrative support for booking, confirming, and delivering gallery activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend and complete mandatory trainings offered through the City of Markham and the Varley Art Gallery
  • Assist the Public Program Coordinator with the development of the 2025 exhibition research package, and training materials that align with the Ontario Curriculum
  • Collaborate with gallery staff including the Curator of Exhibitions to design, and facilitate engaging tours and hands-on activities geared to students in grades JK to 12
  • Assist with overseeing staff, including training, scheduling and time card administration
  • Support the Programs Assistant (Culture) to coordinate school bookings; Assist with communications with teachers and school administration, and create and process invoices following City of Markham policies
  • Design and instruct visual art lessons for children's programs, holiday workshops and March and Winter break camps
  • Contribute to the development of exhibition programs for the general public
  • Responsible for the setup and preparation of studio spaces and art materials, as well as ensuring thorough clean-up after programs
  • Complete all required documentation for the Young Canada Works program
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enthusiastic with a positive, and open communication style
  • Exceptional customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and research and record keeping abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
  • Passion for the arts with 2 to 3 years' experience planning, and facilitating arts activities to children
  • Ability to multi-task, and work independently
  • Work well within a team
  • Willingness to learn new software, and computer systems
  • Experience working in an art gallery or educational setting an asset

CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

  • Must be a graduate from a college or university with a minimum Bachelor's degree in arts administration, education, or related fields.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
  • Be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment
  • Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory.
