Description

The Ministry Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of community-based programs for Mississauga Community Church in accordance with the Salvation Army mission, vision, and values. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant difference in the community and individuals' lives by spreading hope and faith through action. The incumbent will lead and coordinate our teams and volunteers in executing impactful outreach and mission work across the Mississauga area. They will be deeply committed to our mission, enthusiastic about mobilizing community members for service, and skilled in organizing diverse ministry programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Programming

  • Conduct a community needs assessment to determine service gaps and opportunities within the three (3) sites in the Mississauga area.
  • Present recommendations for potential programs to the Outreach and Evangelism Director. Recommendations are to be relevant to the needs of the community, support the development of holistic relationships, and be in keeping with the mission and vision of the Salvation Army.
  • Work closely with the Outreach and Evangelism Directors to develop strategies for reaching out to the broader community and integrating mission work with the church's overall objectives.
  • Develop, implement and supervise community outreach programs that have been supported by and approved by the Corps Officers.
  • Develop trusting, holistic relationships within and outside the church; provide spiritual and social support, assistance, and encouragement to participants / newcomers.
  • Model hospitality and Christian love with participants / newcomers and encourage the church community in this as well.
  • Recommend and assist in the development and revision of outreach program policies.
  • Actively promote the Mississauga Community Church programs within the community with social media and other promotional tools; make presentations to service clubs, schools etc. as needed.
  • Network with community agencies, and other churches to aid in outreach potential.
  • Assist with Christmas programs, Christmas Kettles and special events, etc. as needed.
  • Research and develop materials necessary to supplement the curriculum for the community ministries programming.
  • Create engaging activities for the clients to participate in, develop relationships and assess community needs and review client feedback in order to determine potential alternate programming and develop a strategy for the implementation of such programs.

Volunteers

  • Recruit, train and facilitate church members and volunteers to actively engage in community ministries.
  • Where applicable, link community members to the church family and church programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the church, volunteers, and the community, embodying the church's mission and values in all interactions.
  • Monitor volunteer services to ensure consistency with program criteria.
  • Ensure that outreach programming is adequately staffed with volunteers who are trained and vetted as required.
  • Ensure that all volunteers maintain any mandatory training or certification, identify any training needs and reports to the Corps Officer.

Administration

  • Organize and manage logistics for outreach events, including scheduling, resource allocation, and communication.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of outreach initiatives, providing feedback and recommendations for future improvements.
  • Provide data analysis for programs, record statistics, write and submit reports and letters.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations regarding community ministry.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client and volunteer records, using Salvation Army approved software (Link2feed, S.A.M.I.S).
  • Propose new funding opportunities and initiatives and provide ongoing updates to the leadership team.
  • Prepare funding proposals to support long term sustainability of outreach programs.
  • Maintain operational and statistical reports as required in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
  • Develop and prepare promotional materials and update social media sites.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Army's Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
  • Report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment, or supply needs to the Corps Officer and/or health and safety representative.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There are 2 temporary part-time positions based on 15 - 17.5 hours per week.
  • This job requires the ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. and reach, bend, stoop frequently and or work in a standing position for long periods of time
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for outreach events and activities.
  • Regular attendance at Mississauga Community Church for Sunday worship will greatly contribute to the success of the future candidate in this role, as it will be crucial for supporting the integration of programming.
  • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions, dealing with angry/upset individuals, crisis situations and mental health issues.
  • Travel is associated with this position {up to 20%} between multiple work locations; required to use a Salvation Army program vehicle when available.

Normal hours of work: The supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule as per operational requirements, including weekday evenings and a ½-hour unpaid meal break. The schedule will also require working on weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year in Biblical Studies/Theology, Bible College/Youth Ministry education.
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college diploma program of 2 or 3 academic years preferably in a human services field, i.e., Social Services Worker.
  • Ability and willingness to provide a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification, Mental Health First Aid, Crisis Prevention Institute Certification and Safe Food Handlers Certification.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience in outreach, missions, community programming in a church setting, volunteer coordination, or a related field.
  • A passion for community service and a desire to see lives transformed.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with church members, staff, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, personal vehicle and insurance is required, current copy of driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Attention to detail, problem solving, conflict resolution and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in accordance with The Salvation Army policy and applicable legislation.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
