The Residential Worker engages in service delivery for residents in the Correctional Residential Facility (CRF) and Emergency Shelter. In keeping with the mission of The Salvation Army St Catharines Booth Centre, the incumbent shall build rapport with clients, assess their individual needs and link them to services. The Residential Worker shall ensure residents safety while interacting in a positive, supportive manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Record activities and incidents occurring during the shift in a factual and concise manner using Logbook and/or Incident Occurrence Reports.
  • Conduct initial screening of shelter clients seeking admission and meet their individual needs through on-site services and/or referrals.
  • Provide the first point of contact for persons who are homeless and/or are serving out their Federal Parole at the Centre.
  • Handle the admission, orientation and evaluation of client's understanding of rules; ensure ongoing enforcement of policies.
  • Respond to persons in crisis and utilize de-escalation techniques, if necessary, contact emergency personnel (police, ambulance, etc.)
  • Ensure the completion of intake procedures and paperwork when logging in new clients.
  • Enter client information in HIFIS database and maintain daily bed register.
  • In keeping with individual case plans, record sign-outs, location changes and arrival times for clients serving out their Federal Parole at the Centre.
  • Perform spot-check calls when assigned to confirm Correction Services Canada (CSC) residents' whereabouts and document accordingly.
  • Prepare shelter client information for regional monthly data reports.
  • Monitor the activities of the clients and maintain availability for personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Provide client medication and ensure that medication is always secured in the front office.
  • Distribute client supplies as required.
  • Answer telephone and record and distribute messages.
  • Read general email throughout the shift; reply or forward in a timely manner.
  • Accept and document all donations and place in safe according to procedure.
  • Record and secure all cash received during shift.
  • Monitor the access of all clients into the Booth Centre.
  • Responsible for safe evacuation of clients/residents from the building when necessary.
  • Complete room checks and searches of client belongings upon intake and whenever there is a legitimate safety concern for what may be in clients' belongings.
  • Conduct routine security rounds of the building and record in the logbook when rounds are conducted.
  • Participate in development and implementation of case plans.
  • Report to Caseworker client progress, changes and/or regression in the client's status.
  • Within the client's existing environment encourage, where applicable, positive life-style alternatives: socialization, grooming and hygiene, external social opportunities, respect for dignity of themselves and others, support client ownership of own actions and problem-solving.
  • Seek to enhance own role with service providers as to build confidence and trust.
  • Help clients develop problem-solving and coping-skills.
  • Complete other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There are two permanent part-time positions based on 16 hours per week.
  • Hours of work:

Position 1 - 7:45am to 4:15pm, Saturday & Sunday and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Position 2 - 4:00pm to midnight, Saturday & Sunday and includes a ½ hour paid meal break.

  • The facility is a 24/7 operation and as such the hours of work vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
  • Normal location of work: 184 Church Street, St. Catharine's ON L2R 3E7

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • College Diploma in Social Services/Corrections and / or combination of education and life related experience in working with marginalized individuals.
  • Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain.
  • Current First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain.
  • Training in Naloxone administration and Mental Health First Aid would be assets.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience, including experience in front line work in a correctional or social service setting.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including those experiencing mental health and addictions.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn program specific software such as HIFIS.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
  • To maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and staff of The Salvation Army.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when making decisions.
  • To communicate effectively and efficiently in a positive manner as it relates to all levels of interaction with colleagues, clients and community.
  • A high degree of proficiency in duties as well as being able to handle and prioritize numerous tasks and evident desire for self-development, ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Sensitive and empathetic to vulnerability of clientele.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Competent on word processing equipment, such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Excel.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • An Enhanced Reliability Status Screening with Corrections Canada is required.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
