Laurentian University (LU) Health and Wellness Services provides access to a multidisciplinary team of health professionals including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers and allied health professionals such as physiotherapist and massage therapist in a shared care model. The Centre provides timely access to primary health care and services focused on health promotion and protection, injury and disease prevention catering to the Laurentian University community.

We are presently seeking bilingual family physicians (1-2) to join our multidisciplinary Health & Wellness Centre that will offer scheduled appointments and urgent walk-in services to our students/employee population focused on supporting student success.

Responsibilities

The Part-Time Physician will provide direct clinical care to students, faculty, and staff at Laurentian University Health and Wellness Services. The physician will manage a wide range of health concerns, including acute and chronic conditions, preventive care, and wellness services in a fast-paced, student-centered environment. This role will involve collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and an emphasis on holistic health and mental wellness. The Part-Time Physician will ensure high-quality care, a patient-centered approach, and adherence to all professional and regulatory standards, particularly those specific to Ontario's healthcare system.

Patient Care & Clinical Services:

  • Diagnosis and Treatment: Provide medical assessments, diagnosis, and treatment for a wide range of health issues, including common illnesses, injuries, and chronic conditions;
  • Preventive Health: Offer preventive care services, including immunizations, health screenings, sexual health, and mental health support. Promote health and wellness through education and counseling;
  • Minor Emergencies & Injuries: Provide care for minor injuries and medical emergencies, and direct patients to appropriate specialists or emergency care when necessary; and
  • Prescriptions and Treatments: Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with medical standards and university guidelines. Ensure follow-up care and manage ongoing treatments.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Multidisciplinary Team: Work closely with nursing staff, mental health professionals (counsellors, Psychiatrist), Allied health professionals such as Massage Therapists, Physiotherapists, Sports Medicine Physician, and administrative teams to ensure comprehensive care for students and staff;
  • Referral Network: Provide referrals to specialists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers as necessary; and
  • Health Promotion Initiatives: Participate in campus health promotion and wellness programs, including workshops, health fairs, and mental health awareness campaigns when required.

Administrative and Documentation:

  • Medical Records: Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential medical records for all patients in compliance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and university policies;
  • Clinical Procedures: Follow established procedures for triage, clinical assessments, and documentation to ensure consistency and quality of care; and
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all clinical practices align with Ontario's healthcare laws, regulations, and university guidelines.

Emergency and After-Hours Care:

  • On-Call and Emergency Services: Be available for on-call consultation or medical advice during after-hours when required;
  • Crisis Management: Respond to urgent care situations and provide guidance during campus health crises, including communicable disease outbreaks; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • One (1) to Two (2) years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in primary care, student health services, or an urgent care environment;
  • Familiarity with common health issues and concerns for young adults in a university setting, including mental health, sexual health, and stress-related conditions;
  • Proven experience in a primary care setting, including the management of acute and chronic conditions;
  • Experience in a university or college health services environment is preferred but not mandatory;
  • Previous work with diverse populations, particularly young adults, is highly desirable;
  • Experience in emergency care and the management of minor injuries or medical crises is beneficial;
  • In-depth understanding of Ontario's healthcare laws, including the Health Insurance Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA);
  • Strong diagnostic and treatment skills in the areas of family medicine, adolescent health, and preventative medicine;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide compassionate, empathetic care, and maintain strong patient relationships;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively educate and engage with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment;
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced caseload while maintaining attention to detail and prioritizing patient needs;
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to work with students from a variety of backgrounds and identities;
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs) systems, specifically Telus PS Suite, or similar platforms.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
