Job Description

Site: Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
Department: Oncology
Reports to: Director, Professional Practice
Hours: 18.75 hours per week
Salary: Include hourly rate if union. Example: $19.05 - $26.06 per hour. Start rate non-negotiable. Non-union. Example: $19.05 - $26.06 per hour or annually or wording (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)
Status: Temporary Part-Time (2 years with possibility for extension/transition to permanent)
Closing Date: February 20, 2025

Position Summary

As an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team, the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the Head and Neck Program will work collaboratively with the inter-professional team involved in the plan of care of patients living with head and neck cancer. The CNS will be responsible for developing a care pathway prior to consultation that supports patient access to the necessary diagnostic work up, consultation with the interdisciplinary team, and access to psychosocial resources and clinical trials. In this role, the CNS will be primarily accountable for assessment of new consult requests for completeness of information required to make timely decisions regarding therapy and potential eligibility to clinical trials. By doing so the CNS will engage and support patients and families with navigating their care trajectory and lead the establishment and delivery of a pathway and processes to educate and inform patients of clinical trials and facilitate their enrollment if eligible.

Duties:

  • Develop a care pathway to optimize patient access to timely and comprehensive care including access to active clinical trials.
  • Develop educational supports and nurse-led interventions to enhance patient understanding and informed treatment decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to measure the impact of this novel CNS role on clinical and patient-reported outcomes and trial accrual.
  • Working in collaboration with the extended multidisciplinary clinical team including Nursing, Allied Health (Speech Language Pathology, Social Work, Dietitians) Patient Education Teams, Dental Oncology, Physicians, Clinical Trials Personnel, Administrative Team (physician Administrative Assistants and Referral Booking Coordinators) Referring Physicians offices, Medical Imaging, Laboratory and Pathology.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a graduate degree program in Nursing (Masters degree) or recognized equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience preferred
  • Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program
  • Current Certificate of (licensure)/registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology preferred
  • Knowledge of data management programs
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
