Job Description

Hours: 21 hours per week
Salary: $48.40 - $60.50 (to commensurate with experience consistent with UHN compensation policy)
Shifts: Monday-Sunday
Status: Temporary Part-Time (Contract End Date Feb 2026)
Closing Date: Feb 5, 2025


Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse Specialist - Geriatric Emergency Medicine having a specialty-based focus, functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately care for geriatric patients with acute/chronic illness and promote wellness.

Duties

  • The principal responsibilities of the Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) nurse include a comprehensive gerontological assessment using appropriate screening tools and clinical cognitive and physical assessment (review of significant lab/x-ray tests and current as well as past medical records), and identification of high-risk patient for facilitation of appropriate interdisciplinary follow-up.
  • The GEM CNS position will include coaching, mentoring and supporting staff in the continued development of advanced clinical skills, critical decision making, and patient centered care.
  • Plays a leadership and change agent role in the advancement of nursing practice and standards
  • Supports the implementation of best practices in the care of patients in ED
  • Performs quality improvement and administrative responsibilities
  • Performs research activities; delivering, coordinating, and participating in education.
  • Performs activities to further develop and strengthen the profession; serves as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies
  • Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a master's degree in nursing or recognized equivalent
  • Specialty certificate in gerontology preferred
  • Five (5) years experience in an acute care center
  • Experience in nursing research methodology
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
