THE POSITION:

The Physiotherapist is responsible to provide holistic client and family-centred care to infants, children, youth, adults and high performance athletes who are receiving habilitation and rehabilitation. They will collaborate with and have support from Certified Prosthetists and have access to amputee rehabilitation and gait training resources.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with clients and families to formulate and implement individualized client-centered goals with focused, targeted and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide client care in collaboration with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care, documenting the habilitative/rehabilitative process according to hospital policies and college requirements.
  • Interface and problem-solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers as appropriate to ensure an integrated approach to care.
  • Incorporate evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking/reasoning and utilize research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
  • Utilize the teaching/learning process to provide education on various conditions, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and the community.
  • Provide direct service, consultation, mediation and education to clients, families, and community providers with focus on maximizing the client's physical functioning.
  • Assess prosthetic use and gait, provide gait training, rehabilitation and physiotherapy care and plans, implement and evaluate care in collaboration with the client/family to all ages, levels and abilities.
  • Develop and promote a Clinical Pathway of Amputee Rehabilitation. Promote and support the physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellbeing of patients and families.
  • Practice according to organizational policies and standards for practice as set out by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives such as quality boards, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
  • Document workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health.
  • Document on clients electronic health record as required following Hospital and regulatory college policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training and experience

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in physiotherapy required; master's degree in physiotherapy preferred
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
  • Membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and/or the Ontario Physiotherapy Association is an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with musculoskeletal/orthopedic physical therapy assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications
  • Experience, expertise and specialization in amputee gait training rehabilitation is an advantage
  • Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and Goal Attainment Scaling)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities effectively and efficiently, and to organize time and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team
  • Proven ability to independently take initiative and be self-driven
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development
  • Status appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy at University of Toronto is an asset

Certifications

  • Successful candidate will be required to register with ADP as a Rehabilitation Assessor for limb prostheses if not already certified
  • Registration as an ADP authorizer for mobility aids is an asset
  • Maintain current certificate in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Life Saving course (BCLS) Basic Rescuer (C)
