Reports to: Nurse Manager
Hours: 22.5 hours per week
Salary: $39.07 - $56.00 (start rate in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Status: Permanent Part-Time
Shifts: Days (0730-1930) Nights (1930-0730), Weekends, Holidays
Closing Date: October 31, 2024

Position Summary

As a member of the Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit nursing and multi-disciplinary team, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, the UHN Professional Practice Model and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN to provide compassionate, collaborative and competent care, while meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

The services of the Psychiatric Emergency Department help to provide safe, comprehensive assessment and treatment for those suffering from psychiatric emergencies. The RN works with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, RNs, clinicians, crisis workers, PAs and students. Specifically, the RN in Psychiatric Emergency will be located in the Emergency Department in an area designed to manage and assess Mental Health Emergencies.

Duties

  • Applying knowledge of nursing process, as it relates to scope of practice, to achieve identified patient goals when overall care needs are less complex, outcomes are predictable and risk of negative outcomes is low
  • Identifies and recognizes abnormal or unusual patient responses and consults with the RN or other members of the health care team
  • Provides aspects of care for highly complex patients when in close consultation with the registered nurse directing the patient's care
  • Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure
  • Demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession Performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care
  • Performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification
  • Two (2) years experience in Mental Health, Acute Mental Health preferred
  • Excellent psychiatric assessment skills
  • Understanding of psychiatric disorders, individual development, and family dynamics
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Exceptional decision making and problem solving skills
  • B. Sc. N. preferred
  • Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing preferred
  • NVCI training preferred
  • Previous experience in acute mental health nursing preferred
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment preferred
