Description

The Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the local Trades Start program including supporting program participants who have an interest in skilled trades.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations

  • Assist with recruitment, orientation, and performance of participants in the Trades Start program.
  • Assist participants in developing goals, confidence, self-awareness.
  • Promote the Pathway of Hope program to participants, as seen fit, for ongoing support after program completion.
  • Monitor participants to ensure compliance with the Trade Start Participant Contract including attendance monitoring, use of profanity, following safety procedures and cell phone use.
  • Build and maintain community relationships with local businesses.
  • Connect with community services to develop partnerships between participants and job placements/apprenticeships as appropriate.
  • Connect with potential funders to secure ongoing funding for the program.
  • Ensure all participants and program volunteers are informed of and adhere to policies, protocols, and expectations.
  • Troubleshoot issues, concerns and conflicts with participants, placements, and volunteers.
  • Provide support and ongoing information to employers and participants during placements.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Provide oversight and guidance by managing community volunteers including their recruitment, orientation, scheduling and monitoring performance.
  • Support, assist, train, and demonstrate work methods and ensure that the participants and volunteers work together to achieve the purpose of the Trades Start program.
  • Provide worksite feedback as required to ensure participants and placements health and safety and success.
  • Conduct and log placement check ins and provide feedback.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Communication

  • Network with TSA, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of participants and program.
  • Communicate monthly progress with Community and Family Services Manager.

Reporting

  • Provide monthly reports for Corps Officer, Community and Family Service Manager and develop and complete program evaluation.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records of participants and volunteers.
  • Maintain organized and accurate metrics as required for grant reporting.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible for the following, work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a regular part-time position based on 21 hours per week.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • The working environment is typically in the Wiarton office /church, however trips to "off-site" program locations will also be required.
  • Work location may present machinery noise.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and working in a sitting and standing position for periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Dealing with difficult people and verbal abuse.
  • Travel up to 10% is associated with this position to program and placement sites as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed an Undergraduate University Degree, Human (Social) Services field or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to provide a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including, experience in a specialized social services program; inclusive of supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver's abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Ability to lead, coach and motivate others.
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment must have strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving, conflict resolution and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment and with service providers and professionals.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Sensitivity, awareness and understanding of participant needs, problems, interests, skills, deficiencies, and idiosyncrasies; the ability to work with compassion, demonstrate a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to program participants.
  • Ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to empowering others in working towards their goals; conviction about the capacity of people to grow.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
