Job Description: The Public Health Nurse provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health model. Public Health Nurses translate knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health enhancing behaviours of individuals, families, and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy. Experience

  • One (1) year of public health experience required
  • Experience in public health and implementation of The Public Health Act, 1994

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider Certificate (BLS-HCP)

Other Education and Training

  • Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing is acceptable

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge in current principles and practices of immunization
  • Knowledge in immunology and biologicals used for immunizations
  • Knowledge in population health promotion and its relationship to health status
  • Sound clinical judgement skills.
  • Knowledge in applicable health promotion and health prevention initiatives
  • Knowledge of principles/practices of immunization
  • Knowledge of communicable disease control practices and procedures
  • Ability to learn new skills
  • Advance computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Access).
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health affecting vulnerable populations
  • Ability to use health promotion and prevention strategies for program planning
  • Knowledge in community health nursing theory and principles
  • Knowledge in human behaviour, growth and development
  • Ability to manage anaphylaxis and immunization administration
  • Knowledge of population health approach to health promotion/prevention
  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to exercise independent nursing judgement
  • knowledge of public health nursing in a generalized and focused practice role
  • Knowledge in the principles of Population Health Promotion
  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse social backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and as a leader of a multidisciplinary team
