Job Description: Provides direct nursing care to clients accessing mental health and addiction services care in various community settings. Familiarity with mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders, and withdrawal management strategies, as well as provincial resources available to assist in identifying and accessing the most appropriate care plan for clients. Triages and provides nursing support to clients with psychiatric, substance abuse, medical and detoxification issues in various health care settings. Provides information/education to a wide variety of disciplines across the province using Motivational Assessment Process, Provincial Addiction Clinical Model, DSM- 4R and Transtheoretical Model of Change to assist in appropriate triaging of clients needing mental health and addiction services. This position provides services within the community and will support multiple community sites including Lighthouse and Brief and Social Detox.

Experience

  • 3 years experience in a community or acute mental health setting

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Other Education and Training

  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
  • Nursing diploma is acceptable

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of drug abuse and their effects during use and withdrawal
  • Knowledge in mental health and addictions and concurrent medical conditions
  • Knowledge Transtheoretical Model of Change
  • Knowledge in drugs of abuse and their effects
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated high degree of accuracy is required of assigned responsibility
  • Demonstrates empathy, trust and respect in the provision of care
  • Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing/Assessment
  • Knowledge in methadone/methadone assisted recovery
  • Knowledge in Provincial Addiction Clinical Model and DSM-4R
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Services Act
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to treat patients with compassion and empathy
  • Knowledge in Mental Health nursing processes and appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge in harm reduction in Addictions Medicine
