Job Summary and Requirements

This posting will be used to fill one (1) permanent part-time position and one (1) AOC position. This posting will also be used to establish a 12 month eligibility list to fill future anticipatory perm, term and AOC vacancies.

The job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.

As a Continuing Care Security Officer, your goal is to ensure this facility remains safe and secure for residents, families, employees, and the public. You'll be part of a supportive interdisciplinary health care team working to create a safe workplace for staff and a place the residents call home.

Reporting to Manager, Support Services, under the security portfolio, this position is responsible for maintaining the security of the long-term care home and its residents, staff and visitors as well as the facility assets and grounds. This position requires a combination of strong interpersonal skills as well as an eye for detail. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong client service with an ability to remain professional and tactful in challenging situations (e.g., emergency response or conflict situations). The Security Officer may assist Maintenance Persons and other staff as needed.

Essential qualifications

  • Experience and/or training in responding to emergency situations
  • Experience providing safety and security services
  • Experience maintaining records and preparing comprehensive reports
  • Recent experience providing client-centred services in a front-facing public environment, preferably in a health care or related setting

  • Excellent interpersonal skills involving professional interactions with public, industry stakeholders, residents and staff
  • Used effective communication skills, problem-solving skills, de-escalation techniques, non-violent intervention methods and good judgement to solve conflict problems
  • Works well under pressure and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Knowledge using Microsoft computer software (ie. Outlook, Word, and Excel) and data systems
  • Knowledge of personal safety and security protocols and de escalation techniques
  • Ability to think and work independently with minimal direction

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired or within the time frame noted:

  • TB screening
  • Vulnerable Sector RCMP security clearance
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
  • WHMIS 2015 certificate
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

Interaction with residents and their families, staff and members of the public; exposure to animals; possible exposure to second-hand smoke, infectious disease and latex products; exposure to plants/flowers; working in severe weather conditions and indoor temperatures of approximately 75 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius); shift work, weekends and statutory holidays within a 24/7, 365 days per year setting; walking 8-10 km or more per day, standing and bending.
